It is the home owners responsibility to keep meters visible and accessible at all times. Please do not bury the meter box with bark mulch or dirt if you build a garden around it. Also, if you choose to build a garden around the meter box, please be aware that the meter reader may have to walk through the garden to gain proper access for reading. If the meter reader needs to spend time clearing bush and grass from around your meter box you may be subject to charges for time required to locate and clear around the box. Charges will also apply if the meter box is no longer at the same grade as your property due to landscaping. We thank you for your cooperation in keeping the boxes visible and accessible.
Meter Reading is carried out by the District every two months (February, April, June, August, October, and December), and bills are sent out mid-month of the same month. If you have any reason to read your own meter you should know the following:
STEP 1 Locate your meter box, generally found towards the front of a property, near the street. In newer subdivisions meter boxes are generally located at the centre of lot. It is generally housed in a green plastic box with a black lid usually marked "water". Remove the lid by using a tool such as a large screwdriver. Insert the tool into side of the lid and gently pry the lid up. Be careful here there are wires attached to the meter from the lid.
STEP 2 Once you open the meter box lid, on the face of the meter, there is a large dial and a display of numbers. Read the number display from left to right. Be sure to include the stationary zero. This is your meter reading. Meters measure water in cubic feet or cubic meters. Charges for the amount of water consumed are rounded to the nearest hundred cubic feet or equivalent in Cubic Meters used during a billing period. Compare that reading to what your bill states as your current or present reading on your last bill to determine the amount of consumption used since the last billing.
STEP 3 Keep in mind that you might be checking your meter on a date different from the one used for billing. This could result in a difference in the amount you find, compared with the amount on which your bill is based. However, if your reading is considerably higher than what is on your bill, check for a leak or try to determine the source of large water use. If your reading is significantly lower than the reading on your bill, please contact us and let us assist you in determining the problem.
